Using a Minimalist Approach to Spiritual Health

Using a Minimalist Approach to Spiritual Health

By

Spiritual health can quite often be the most difficult area to pin point and expand upon when it comes to holistic health. Many get off track and expect to discover their spiritual growth in things not related to their faith such as in their social networks, their family, or the activities they complete for their physical health. However, spiritual health is more than just bridging connections between the other three aspects of holistic health. Rather, it is about deepening our understanding of our purpose for being on this earth, for embracing what brings meaning to our lives, and how to live our life more intentionally guided by our spiritual walk. Minimalists often understand spiritual health more easily than most simply because they already seek to live a life of meaning and purpose. What do minimalists do to grow in their spiritual health? Here are a few foundational tools when looking to expand on your spiritual health.

Make Spiritual Health a Priority

Although we often mention spiritual health last when we list off the key areas of holistic health, it is actually arguably one of the most vital. Without purpose and direction in one’s life, there is very little reason to have physical, mental, and emotional health. Spiritual health provides you with the purpose for doing the other aspects of your life that are so important to you.

For this reason, it is essential that your spiritual health becomes the priority of your day, your week, your year, your life, etc. How do you make it your priority? First, carve out some time to reflect on what your spiritual growth means to you. Once you have your thoughts on paper, look at all the aspects of your life, from work to home, and consider how each activity connects to your overall purpose in life. If an activity, a person, or a responsibility is leading you away from spiritual growth, it is best for it to be cut away from your life if possible.

For the items that remain, look to see how you may be able to connect your faith to the activity taking place. For example, how might washing dishes grow your spirituality? When you see the task connected to your purpose and your faith, it becomes much more meaningful and actually draws you closer to your spirituality. It is also important for you carve out some time in your day to grow in your faith whether it is through reading, meditation, attending services, etc. Use your time wisely, so that you may grow spiritually.

Find Mentors to Encourage Your Spiritual Growth

Although your spiritual health is uniquely your own, seek out others who encourage your growth. When it comes to something as precious as your spirit and your purpose, don’t you want to be surrounded by individuals who wish to see you succeed and grow? In order to foster positive relationships when finding a mentor, first begin by looking in the community you are most likely to find such an individual. Then, notice if there is a person in particular who you admire and respect within this group. You do not necessarily want someone who will always tell you, you are right, but rather someone who will give you proper guidance and growth moments when you are experiencing a particular fork in the road.

Once you have established a relationship with your mentor, it is important to meet with them regularly in order to constantly foster and encourage your spiritual growth. Do not be afraid to be share dilemmas with them, ask questions about their own spiritual journey, or acknowledge when you are grappling with a particular idea or concept. Your mentor is with you to support your growth and share in a journey with you.

Share Your Spiritual Health with Others

Another component when it comes to strengthening your spiritual health is sharing your faith with others. After all, if your spiritual health is the reason for your purpose, how do you live life without communicating such a significant aspect of your life? The more you share your spiritual journey, faith, and growth with others, the more your purpose will shine back on you. Others will be able to better understand who you are and why you do what you do. This will only increase your spiritual wellbeing.

Spiritual health is crucial in the pursuit of finding balance in your holistic health overall. Without establishing your purpose and cultivating your spiritual growth, everything else in life becomes irrelevant. In order to foster your spiritual growth, take some time to evaluate your priorities and how you spend your time, be sure these priorities match up to your faith, surround yourself with people who encourage you to grow, and find a person you can look to when you need proper guidance. Then, share your spiritual beliefs with others through your thoughts, words, and actions. Holistic health is comprised of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, but for the minimalist, the greatest of these may arguably be spiritual health.
